1/6/2024 0 Comments Its the vibeIn a way, when artists do come up and take the spotlight, there’s always that sense of, I’ve been there, and any advice I can give can hopefully give them comfort. You’re an Australian institution now, but you’re still very young – is it daunting to take on the role of mentoring other artists in the early stages of their career? Oh, for sure, all the time. Or if they’re physically moving – “I think they’re moving, I think they’re dancing” – that’s giving me energy. If they’re giving me a high note that gives me goosebumps, that’s when I automatically turn, or if they’re giving me storytelling and I’m feeling it emotionally, that’s when I’ll turn. ![]() You’re creating on top of what they’re giving you, what their vibe is. That’s a normal thing when you can’t see something, you just envision – and when you do turn around you’re like whoa, what am I looking at? Because you have no clue. I’m thinking, who is this person, their music and how they’re singing it is literally creating this vision. Particularly if I was to perform that, listening to the tone or the rhythm of the song – how high or low they’re singing. When you’re choosing your acts as coach, what are you looking for, besides just a “good voice”? When I’m thinking about an act I’m consciously thinking about all of the layers, and as I’ve gotten older there’s so many things that I am thinking about. There was a lot of building and improvement and trying to become something that I really had no idea about. I grew up singing in the backyard with my sisters and my dad playing the guitar, and harmonising, and that led to myself and my sisters performing for the congregation at church, which led to singing in a choir. Have you performed a lot with your family? A lot. Or your little brother’s off key, things like that which come to life and take you back to the very beginning. ![]() There’s nothing like performing with family because it either brings out the best of you, or brings out the worst of you! The fear of your dad giving you the eye because you’re not singing high enough or hard enough. As a coach, or someone who’s been performing for such a long time, it brings me back to a humble grounding, where that’s kind of where I started with my family. ![]() It’s an incredible insight because we’re so used to seeing a well-oiled, perfect kind of performance, whereas none of them has had this high experience before and they’re doing it for the first time. So you get an insight into the performers that you might not get when they’re performing solo. Keith Urban, Jessica Mauboy, Rita Ora and Guy Sebastian on The Voice Generations.
